Chapter Ten
Home At Last
The guards at the gate looked curious to see Dare accompanied by a bunny girl, as well as in clear awe of Lily's beauty. Not to mention showing a bit of jealousy for him.
She'd changed into her lovely silver gown before they approached Terana, and he'd offered her his arm as they came into view of the gate. She looked radiant as they walked down the road, showing no signs she'd spent the entire day running hard.
Which was a stark contrast to his own disheveled state, in serious need of a proper bath and clean change of clothes.
His companion stared at the guards a bit nervously as they approached, then jumped in surprise and looked on the verge of bolting as the two men abruptly clapped fist to chest in salute and roared in unison, âHuzzah for the hero of Marona's Field!â
âWhat's going on?â she hissed anxiously.
Dare smiled at the guards as he returned their salute. âRemember the party rated monster I told you about? It was the leader of a monster horde we fought near where the Home Ward dropped us off.â
âWow, that's incredible.â Lily smiled a bit tentatively the guards, who bowed low to her with the utmost courtesy as they waved them through the gate.
Although her nervousness returned and she pressed close to his side as they made their way down Terana's streets, which at this hour were crowded with a modest number of passersby. All of whom couldn't help but gawk at the beautiful bunny girl in an evening gown on the arm of a sweaty, travel-stained man.
âWhy are they looking at me?â she hissed. âAre they going to try to mount me?â
Dare had no doubt a lot of the male onlookers would love to do just that. He comfortingly patted her hand resting on his arm. âIt's not every day they see a ethereally lovely, elegant young woman walking down their streets. You stand out like a rose in a thistle patch.â
âHey!â Lily protested, although she was smiling. âI like thistles. Their flowers are pretty and they're delicious.â She grimaced. âAlthough when I'm in my usual state it's no fun to walk through a patch of them.â
He assumed her usual state was nude, like most bunny girls. And he could certainly appreciate the discomfort of brushing against a bunch of prickly plants like that.
They headed straight for Montshadow Estate, although on the way Dare found himself stopping dead in spite of the hurry he was in, staring in amazement at a new monument in the market square.
It was a simple stone block, separated off by ropes. In the center of the block a familiar axe was buried in the stone deep enough to stick, its haft rising into the air higher than most men stood.
The Monstrous Battleaxe trophy from the Cursed Orc Warchief.
He'd completely forgotten about the item in the wake of the Darkblade's attempted assassination, and in the brief thought he'd given it since had assumed that it would find its way to Nirim Manor along with the other loot he'd left behind.
